What is God trying to tell you?
By Marc Engelhardt
God is real and active in our lives and our communication with him is not only one way.
We speak to God in prayer whether the prayer is formal, out loud, silent, or the wanderings of our mind throughout the day. But that is all giving our thoughts to God, what about God returning his will to us?
It is a dangerous endeavor to say or think “God told me…” Why? Because as soon as we do that, we are pronouncing God’s will. Think about it, what if you had a friend that went around saying “Bubba told me…”, but you didn’t tell her anything, or she twisted what you said to fit her own desires? Would you be happy with her? Of course not. How much more dangerous is it for us to go around saying “God told me….”.
At the same time, we cannot deny that God is active in our world and that his Spirit communicates his will to us. We have to be open to what God says, to what his plan is, to the fact that he indeed tells us things. But how do we balance that fact with not misrepresenting God? It starts with community.
If you feel like God is nudging you in a certain direction, first stop, be still and quiet and pray for more wisdom. Second, check it against scripture. The Holy Writ is what the family of God has deemed as corroborative with what God has directly revealed to his creation through the ages. If it does not disagree with scripture, take it to your brothers and sisters. Allow the wisdom of the Spirit in them to help discern if, and what, the Lord has said. Last be open to correction and change.
Be open to God speaking in your life. He is active and he loves you and wants the best for you.
