Deeper Study: Lord’s Supper

By Marc Engelhardt

The Deeper Study this week is a bit different. It calls for reflection and contemplative thought with a familiar part of the Christian life.

Sometimes, when we take part in the Lord’s Supper, we are actually just taking the Lord’s Supper. Do you see the distinction? The grace and forgiveness we receive through this gift is real and personal, but there is more going on than just personal renewal.

In Holy Communion we come to the table of the Lord, and we are sharing the gift of the invitation and reception with all those who are sharing the table with us. The Lord’s Supper is not just individual, but communal. Therefore, we need to be right with those sharing the table in order to receive the full benefits of what it means to be in communion.

How are ways to do this? Are there times when you should not take part? How does seeing this aspect of the Lord’s Supper as important add to the benefits of the gift?
