So the Lord says to my Lord: Mark 12:35-37

By Marc Engelhardt

And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David?

David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, “‘ The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet.’

David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?” And the great throng heard him gladly.

In this section of scripture Jesus challenges the common Jewish perception that the religious leaders had at the time. They were looking for the Messiah to be a king that would give them power over the nations, and this king was to be a son of David. What Jesus points out is that the Messiah is more than an earthly ruler and more than just a son of David–why else would David give him more respect than himself?

An interesting note is that the crowd of people were apparently open to the idea.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, you are always greater than we expect, help us to never doubt your power or mercy. Amen.
